Health Care Shares Keep Nasdaq in the Green

Health care stocks were helping to keep the Nasdaq Composite index near its break-even mark for today’s session, with the NYSE Health Care Index (^NYP) rising nearly 0.9% while shares of health care companies in the S&P 500 (XLV) were up more than 0.5% as a group.

In company news, Dynavax Technologies (DVAX) declined Thursday after the biopharmaceutical company today said it was reshaping operations and its strategy – including laying off more than one-third of its current workforce – to better focus resources on its immuno-oncology portfolio while also advancing its hepatitis B vaccine drug candidate through the regulatory process.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration previously said it would require more time to evaluate the company’s biologics license application for Heplisav-B and the company today said it has suspended production of the perspective hepatitis B vaccine in a bid to save money ahead of an agency decision.
